Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were established before 1964 to serve Black students who were denied traditional educational opportunities. Today, there are 107 HBCUs across the country that offer degree programs to students of all backgrounds, with advantages like strong student support systems and career advising. Established in 1910, NCCU is a liberal arts HBCU in Durham.

In 1942, the university was a fully coeducational institution. There are 11 active HBCUs in North Carolina, 10 of which are accredited. North Carolina also has the most enrolled Black undergraduate students in the U.S. and the second most HBCUs in the nation behind Alabama, which has 14 HBCUs.

Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) was founded in 1892 and is also part of the UNC System. Application requirements for incoming first-year students vary based on age. For those under 21, requirements include four units of English, four units of math, two units of social studies, and more.
